The widow’s mites.
Mark 12:41-44: "Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-all she had to live on.""
And;
Luke 21:1-4: "As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.""
Who looks on when we give? It is interesting that Jesus was concerned by people’s giving, how and when they give more than how much in the amount, but more how much of what you’ve got.
When did she give? At the time of her greatest need.
To whom did she give it? To God, the treasury was but the vehicle for her giving (or act of worship) unto God.
Who received it? The Levites, who were better off than what she was.
Why two mites? It wasn’t her last one, it was the last two, and she didn’t keep one!
Her concern to honour God was greater than her obligation to ‘look after her own household’. She did not have a husband who would ‘make up for her giving’; she had to give by faith, trusting that God would supply her needs.
